The 7th running of the Irish Derby was held on Wednesday 26th June 1872 over 1 mile 4 furlongs of The Curragh. The winner was owned by Mr A R Bourne (as shown on the Honours board, but Mr McDonogh in some accounts), trained by Denis Wynne and ridden by William Miller. The winner, bred in England by Charles Snewing, won by 4 lengths, with a distance back to the third.

The filly Trickstress and Speculation made the early running while the Pleasure colt, later named Pleasure Seeker, kept close order. This order was maintained throughout the race, with Trickstress winning hands down by a comfortable 4 lengths, with the Pleasure colt a distance back in third.
